About five years ago, one of my dearest friends and spiritual mentors died. He had lived a rich and full life, but I was selfishly very sad. The day he died, I found two yellow feathers laying on my back porch step. In my heart I know it was my friend leaving a sign for me…or one of my angels telling me that he was OK. From that day, I started finding feathers everywhere. Those feathers were a sign to me that I was on the right path.
I had so many feathers that I mounted them into a book along with some favorite emails from my friend. I have shared that book with a few people who also had the same love for this man.
One memorable feather-find was on the day my first grandchild was born. She had to go into ICU for precautionary measures. Of course, I was worried! That afternoon while walking her dog, I looked down and found a feather.
On that same grandchild’s first birthday, my daughter and I took her to the zoo. As we were turning the corner into the zoo, I spotted a feather that was sticking out of the ground like a ‘sign’. Of course, I had to stop and get it.
This story is background for the story I will tell now. Two months ago my husband’s closest friend took his own life. He was recently diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and did not see another way out. I loved him and do not judge his decision. This year I shared my feather book with my husband’s friend because he also loved my spiritual mentor. He loved the book because it gave him comfort. He was going through such ups and downs in his life last year, that I don’t think he wanted to return the book. My husband’s friend loved my mystical viewpoints. He had a beautiful mind and was one of the most intelligent people I have ever known.
Chris took his own life in his backyard. Instead of going to his funeral mass, I decided to go to their home and do some clearing around their house. (I am an environmental and personal energy consultant.) My hope was that it would lighten the energy for his beloved wife, Ann, and their two sons. As I cleared in the backyard that windy morning, I felt as though our friend’s spirit left very quickly. Later that day I told Ann that I went to her house and ‘did what I do’.
The following week Ann left a message for my husband. She said that she had gone into the backyard to the place where she found her husband and on the ground there were so many feathers! She also saw my feather book and this is why she called. She later shared with me that she did not think for the first few days that she would be able to remain in the house, but has felt better since the clearing. So…who knows? I choose to believe that this man’s incredibly magnificent soul manifested those feathers so that Ann would know that he is at peace.
