The Last Straw

I wanted to share a little story with everyone.

This week I have been cussed out, flipped off, and told off. So, when the thing I’m about to tell you happened, it was really the last straw.

I am driving down the highway and it starts to pour down rain. The roads get really, really slippery. Up ahead this car loses control and goes into the next lane; over corrects, does a 180 and hits a pole. The back end of her car pretty much wraps around this pole. So what do the people on the highway do……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. NOTHING!

So, of course, I get out and check on her. She was ok, but I thought she might hyperventilate, but she was not injured. So all was well.

The point is that probably 200 cars at least, drove by in that time as it was rush hour traffic. I guess that’s the thing about it – people these days are so much in a “rush” they forget the things they are supposed to be doing… like love your neighbor as yourself. This person could have been dead, bleeding, had broken bones, etc. It was a serious accident. But everyone felt their lives were more important than helping another. Yes, it was raining. Yes, I had to change clothes and my dress shoes may have to be thrown out – but this in not important.

I am by no means tooting my own horn here. I just want everyone, myself included, to take a look at things around them and leave them better than they found them.

It’s not the big things. It’s the small ones we often overlook:
Opening a door for a lady.
Helping someone with their groceries if their hands are full
Saying hello to someone who looks like they are having a bad day.
Going out of your way to do something small.
Giving a few bucks to someone who is in need.
Volunteering for a worthy cause… and so on.

So, I guess what I am saying is, let’s all do a better job at doing a better job!

I challenge everyone to step up and step out this week and do something for someone else that you may usually pass up on, not because you may feel better for doing it – and especially not because you want something in return – but just because it’s the right thing to do.

Ok, thanks for reading. Have a good week.

I'll take that challenge -- and challenge each one who reads this to do the same. We CAN change the world around us for the better starting with one act of kindness.

Good idea. Thankfully, we are not called on that often to do such dramatic things. But we can always act on those little impulses to make the world a better place--smile at someone, send a card, pass on a compliment, tell someone what you like about them.
