Running Late

Not in the greatest mood

I am writing this story to let people know how continuing on ahead, instead of turning, made a difference in people’s lives.

I was driving to work about 7:00 in the morning. I was running late and not in the greatest mood. I was driving fairly fast because I knew I had about 45 more minutes left to get there. Up ahead I saw a car on the side of the road. I thought it was somebody with a flat tire, and out in the country where I live, I knew I would have to stop and help.

So I thought I will just turn before I get there so then I won’t have to stop. But I decided to continue on. As I got closer, I noticed somebody lying on the ground outside of the car with a man standing there beside the person. As I got closer, I realized it was one of our family friends standing there and the person on the ground was his wife. For the past 5 months she had been fighting lung cancer. I immediately pulled over and ran over there. All he said was, “She is gone.” He is about 80 years old so he could not do much.

I jumped down there and started CPR. It took about 20 minutes for an ambulance to show up. They took her to the hospital, but she did not end up making it.

To this day her family will do anything for me. It is hard to understand because I didn’t save her, so why would they do that for me? I guess to them it wasn’t the fact that I saved her or not, but that I stopped and helped.

So for everyone, if you see someone stranded on the side of the road, or in any situation where you may think you won’t be able to help or make a difference, remember my story. To that family, I changed their lives. And it can happen when you least expect it.
