I have always thought it would be neat to be a mentor to someone, but it just never happened. While visiting with a friend one day, I was informed about a new program that was being formed to match struggling children with a “buddy mentor”, as they called them. I eagerly inquired and liked what I heard. I was then assigned a 4th grade girl. I was told she was struggling with her reading and was quite behind in school.
When we met, we hit if off right away. She was a delight to be around, and yes, she was struggling with her reading that hurt her in other subjects as well.
As we met, a funny thing began to happen. This little girl’s attitude and personality were such that I actually would find excuses to be with her. I had never been around someone, especially that young, who was so positive. What got my attention was that she never had anything bad or negative to say about anyone. She could always find something positive to say.
Her reading improved rapidly and I found myself asking her questions such as how she developed such a positive and caring attitude. She was actually becoming a mentor to me! Because of this little girl and our relationship together I was becoming more positive and I think more fun to be around. I developed her attitude of finding the good in others rather than finding fault.
Yes, we are best buddies now and I guess you could say we are mentoring each other although I know I’m getting the best deal! It is still somewhat awkward explaining to my friends that I have a mentor helping me with life issues, and she is only 10 years sold!
