Helping Stamp Out Hunger - Seed By Seed

In the small community of Spencer, Oklahoma, there’s something wonderful happening. Since 1999, the City County Community Garden (founded by Floyd Jameson, Jr.) has fed hundreds of families with produce. This is a small community with approximately 4,000 residents. Many of these residents live below the poverty line.

With the help of several dedicated volunteers and donations from individuals and companies, and permission to use land from the Oklahoma City Public School, the garden is able to help meet the needs of the elderly and low-income families each year.

If it were not for such a garden like this, Mr. Jameson would have gone hungry many days while growing up. This experience has left Mr. Jameson with a desire to do what he can to stop huger, and to help those who really need it.

When a community comes together like this, it’s very special. In springtime there is planting and there is watching seeds sprout. During summer there is the harvest, and then in the fall there is the celebration of Thanksgiving.

When Mr. Jameson was a child, a garden put food on his family’s table. Now, as an adult, he wants others to make it through some tough times with a garden that puts food on their tables. He certainly is paying it forward!

Actually I did not write tnis story. This must have been written by Doug. However - Mr. Jameson is indeed a remarkable man. I have worked with him for about five years now in his efforts to feed folks in his community. He does it with very little help and a small budget. His efforts though are rewarding to him - one can see it in his eyes as he speaks of the process and the results. Bruce

Well I've got egg on my face. It was Floyd's daughter, Debra, that helped write this story and not Bruce. I got to meet Debra. She is a very lovely lady and very supportive of her fathers efforts. Floyd is very thankful for the support he has gotten from the school for allowing him to use their land to raise produce for the community. But Floyd wanted to especially thank Bruce for his help in making this garden project what it is today. It's amazing what can get accomplished when people work together toward a common goal. Again, I apologize for posting this story with the wrong author.

I'd like to share some incredible things my friend Bonnie is doing for the homeless folks in OKC. On her days off, she takes ready-made food to an area where she learned they live. She tries to make sure it's nutritious because some of them may just eat once a day. She's also purchased a tent for one of the gentlemen so he can have shelter from the elements. She stays completely anonymous about it, not wanting to boast because her inspiration comes from her faith in Jesus Christ.

As a native of Oklahoma I have quit being surprised at how genuine, ingenious and hard working the people are. We have lived and loved in 3 states and choose to "retier" back in OK. This story "feeds" body and soul and brightened my outlook. ALso is there anything more special than a Grampa? Doubt it. Whomever the author is thanks for the good reminders.

Hello everyone, this man is my dad. He is a wonderful man. I grow up with the wonderful veggies and fruits. I would like to ask if anyone would like to make a donation. The donation can be a pack of seeds to help provide more for the Community Garden. If you would like to make a donation, you can call him at 405-306-2606 ask to speak to Floyd Jameson. Our family think that he is a wonderful man and we love what he is doing for the community.
