When I had first started working, it was at a theater called AMC. I dreaded going to work because the employees wouldn't do their jobs properly and the people that came to the concession stand had a tendency to be rude if you couldn't predict what they wanted. They just wanted to get in, get the food, and get to the show. They would take it out on the employees for taking too long because they were already late to their movie. We worked as fast as possible but it wasn't our fault that they didn't come to the show early enough to get things taken care of. It amazed me how callous society could be towards a human being, but I wasn't the only one who was looked down upon.
There was this young man that looked helpless trying to find a way to order his items. He was mute and the employees just passed him down the line till he came to me. I only knew basic sign language, but I didn't know very much to help him but I tried my best and eventually was able to get him what he wanted. He was so thankful that I took the time to help him, that I didn't shun him like the rest, that I at least tried to understand what he was saying. Before he left my register, in sign language he told me that I was beautiful on the inside. It meant the world to me. I have never seen him again, but I will never forget him.
Even in the glum of a Friday night rush, he was able to make me believe that people can care and if I show kindness, eventually someone will return the favor, even if it is something small.
