Taking two sick children to the doctor’s office can be a challenge; especially knowing I would have at least an hour’s wait before I could get in to see her. But I will never forget what happened that day.
We arrived at the office and checked in. They said I should expect at least an hour’s wait. Not good news as both of my children were quite sick with one crying and the other just moaning and complaining. We found our seats and within maybe five minutes, a gentleman, who was also waiting to get in, got up and went to the receptionist and asked her if this lady with the two children could see the doctor in his slot. He seemed to talk somewhat loud, so most everyone in the waiting room heard him make this request. I immediately got up and thanked him and thought, ‘What a wonderful gesture’.
It wasn’t two minutes later when a lady got up and went to the receptionist and did the same thing. This was unbelievable! I had never experienced anything like this before. I thought maybe they were getting tired of hearing my children make so much noise that they just wanted to get me out of there, but they didn’t act that way. Not a minute later, nearly everyone in the waiting room made their way to the receptionist requesting that my children and I go before them.
I began thanking each person, and then I lost it and began crying by this outpouring of kindness. That had to be a scene – a mother and both children crying!
Just then a nurse came and said the doctor would see me. After we saw her and did the blood tests, etc, I went back to the receptionist to reschedule. She said she had been a receptionist for over fifteen years in various doctors’ offices, and had never seen anything like that happen. She said, “I think that first man who came up, talked extra loud on purpose so everyone could hear.” When others started coming up, she said she could see him with a gentle smile on his face. I looked around for him, but he was gone. I wanted to hug him.
I never will forget that the day I was regretting, turned out to be one of the most memorable days of my life.
