The phone call did not come from me. But I did get a phone call telling me of The Phone Call.
I have a really close girlfriend, one from college days, which has a mentally and physically challenged daughter. I’m just going to call her daughter “The Dancing Queen,” because that is her favorite of all songs in the Universe. This little girl just turned 21, which, by all accounts, is quite the age to be! But she did not go out and celebrate as a lot of others would have. Instead, she enjoyed a meal at Cracker Barrel with her family.
But, a month later, a phone call came to her house. It was Richard Simmons.
About two years ago, Dancing Queen and her Mom went to see the Southern Women’s Show at their local Civic Center. Richard Simmons was going to be there. DQ had been an avid fan of his fitness videos since she was 5 years old, watching them over and over, knowing each and every song, but not necessarily exercising to them! She adored Richard.
To make a long story short, The Dancing Queen met Richard there. Pictures were taken. Memories were made.
Turning 21 is a big deal, and Mom wanted to do something special for her girl. She thought of Richard. She sent out an email to his website, asking him if it would not be too much trouble to give her girl a call for her birthday.
She waited. The birthday came and went. But, a month later…..
…the phone rang…three separate times…until The Dancing Queen picked up the receiver. Richard said, “Happy Birthday, Dancing Queen, sorry I’m late.” The call lasted 10 minutes. Her birthday was now complete.
Why am I telling you all this? Because to me, when I heard this story, I was given a sneak peak into the life of one man who probably is a thousand times busier than I am, doing things for literally tens of thousands of people, and he stops what he is doing to make one little phone call. To one young lady.
