A while back when I was in Santa Fe, New Mexico, I visited The Plaza –
a Place where many walks of life come together. I noticed something on
the other side was really drawing a crowd. I worked through the crowd
so I could see what was going on. There was this very average looking
man playing a guitar, and of course, his cup was sitting out for
donations. But this was not what was causing the crowd. Beside him was
his dog. They looked like buddies. But the scene didn’t stop there. On
top of the dog was a cat. Yes, a cat was lying on top of this dog, and
the dog couldn’t care less! But there’s more. On top of the cat was a
mouse! Yes, a mouse sat on top of the cat that was on top of the dog!
This was something to behold. It was almost unbelievable!
I
had to know how he trained these animals to do this, so I worked my way
all the way up to him and asked, “How did you train these animals to
get along and do this?” His answer was a simple question, “It makes you
wonder why people can’t get along, doesn’t it?”
I have asked
myself this question many times since that day. This event has made me
think of the old Indian saying, “Don’t criticize anyone until you have
walked a mile in his moccasins.”
I know one thing for sure, if
a dog, a cat, and a mouse can learn to get along, I still have a ways
to go! Premature judgments and prejudices can certainly get in the way
of a good relationship. It sure has mine!
