This is a story that goes back almost 70 years, but is still a very real memory for me. We grew up on a farm in NW Oklahoma and our father had emphysema, and as the years went on he became progressively worse. At this particular time he was sick in bed and it was hay time. He had a brother that lived nearby and he was putting up oats for winter feed for him. This in itself is a mean job on a humid day in Oklahoma. A neighbor, who was also a farmer and had lots of work of his own, drove by on his tractor going to another place to work, and instead of going to his own field and putting up his own hay for the winter, Melvin pulled into our place and into the field to help my Uncle, as he knew our family situation. Our family could not believe what we were seeing and Melvin stayed until the job was done. This act of kindness left an indelible impression on me.

What compassion and caring Melvin had. If all of us could see the needs of others and lend a hand, what a better world we would have!

I am Melvin's granddaughter, Kamie and I am so blessed to hear this story of my beloved grandpa. Somehow because of knowing how caring and selfless grandpa was it makes me feel better about myself and what a beautiful gift that is! Thank you, Kamie
